No-work weekends are hard to come by with the kind of work that I do. So, when an honest-to-goodness weekend comes by, I grab the opportunity to spend time with my growing son. It doesn’t really have to be a grandiose bonding moment. Sometimes, we just spend the entire day having a DVD marathon at home, or playing a board game or a computer game. What matters, according to him, is that we’re together.
Since Monday, January 23, was a holiday, my son asked if we could watch the movie, “Alvin and the Chipmunks 3.” I really didn’t want to watch it, and preferred “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” instead, but he said that he liked the one for kids better. Okay then, I obliged. It’s not very often I get to go out on a date with my son on a Monday.
After the movie, we went around the mall to window-shop, but ended up buying him a light gray jacket, which he wanted to wear immediately. As soon as he had the jacket on, he was already doing several poses, hip-hop style (well, that’s how it seemed to me!). Gone are the days when we would go straight to the Marvel section and look for Spider-Man items. Definitely, those days are over.
Just so we could eat something different from the usual, we decided to have an early dinner at Tender Bob’s. We went through the menu and decided what to order. I asked him if he could be the one to do the ordering. He did…
And in that moment, I knew I lost my boy…
There he was, my Mokong, in his “pa-pormang” jacket giving an order. He looked like a teenager out on a first date.

He did well, by the way. He just forgot to say “thank you.”
This weekend made me realize that the more I bury myself with work, the more I’m bound to miss out on his growing moments. I am so grateful for the weekend off, I got to spend time with him and went out on a date with my son.
I’m pretty sure someday, these dates wouldn’t be with me anymore.

Aww… binata na.
